1880's Miniature Victorian Isle of Man Bohemian Glass Jug & Bowl Set
#001 Antique Miniature Yellow Pitcher and Bowl set
On pitcher front: "A Present from Douglas" is hand painted in fine gold gilt script.
This is a tiny, beautiful and very luscious hand painted and hand enameled 3 inch high yellow vintage Victorian Bohemian souvenir pitcher or jug & bowl set. It is a 19th c. souvenir from the town of Douglas, which is the capital and largest city on the Isle of Man (or Isle of Mann) off the coast of Great Britain and Ireland.
In 1878, the Loch Promenade was constructed there and the town greatly enhanced for the blooming tourist trade. It reached it's height in 1887, when over 310,000 visited Mann to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee celebration, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her accession to the thrown in 1837. This piece is from this time period.
Measuring 3 inches in height, this is a tiny bohemian art glass set with gold gilt, applied flowers, and deep yellow interior on both. It could also be seen as a child's or children's toy set due to its miniature size. It features swirling opalescent and mottled blown glass with a ground pontil on both pieces, and deeply applied colourful enamels. Bohemian glass was made in the area of Bohemia and Silesia, now parts of the Czech Republic. It has a very long history of high quality craftsmanship and innovation in glass. Condition is excellent, click for large photos.
Size: Pitcher 3 inches tall, Bowl 3 inches wide.
