19th c Oriental Staffordshire Scalloped Imari Bowl, R Mark
#AD397 1870's Oriental Imari Slop Bowl
by Hollinshead & Kirkham Tunstall, Staffordshire
A beautiful circa Victorian era Imari scalloped bowl in deep reds, blues measuring 5 inches in diameter. It is decorated both inside and out with Imari floral embellishments of oriental fans in red, navy and gold gilt. Some of the gold gilt embellisment are worn in the navy blue rectangles seen in the Chinoiserie design.
It has an incised R mark. This imari pattern is known to have been made by Hollinshead & Kirkham (Ltd) at the Unicorn Pottery, in Tunstall Staffordshire which was in business from 1870-1956. It was first established 1870 at Burslem, then moved 1876 at Tunstall. The factory was purchased by Johnson Bros (Hanley) Ltd. in 1956. We have had this same piece years ago with that mark.
There is no other marking other than the large and deeply incised R as seen in photo. Was this piece made by Hollinshead & Kirkham? Truly cannot say 100%, please contact me if you have other info, love to learn.
This lovely old piece was found in Devon. See close up photos.
Condition, no chips cracks or repairs, just as seen in photos.
Size: 8 inch across, about 1.5 inches high
