1830's Sunderland Pink Splash Lustreware Child's Miniature Cup & Saucer
#AD239: Child's Pink Lustre Miniature Tea Set
Pink Luster! This is a beautiful small "splash" pink lustre ware pottery coffee can cup and saucer set, still intact, from the 1820's. It would be called a "Sunderland" piece, which refers to where it was made, not one particular pottery factory. Sunderland, in Tyne and Wear, England, sits about 10 miles southeast of Newcastle at the mouth of the River Wear. There were 16 potteries in Sunderland and about half were known to produce pink lustreware. The term Sunderland then refers to an area.
To achieve the popular and beautiful pink luster splash affect, oil was randomly dropped onto the lustred piece before it was fired.
This small cup measures 2.5 inches in diameter and the saucer measures 4.5 inches. We have taken a photo with a thimble to show its relative small size. It has much "splash" and deep colour. The saucer bottom has a "glob' of pink that has oozed from the rim edge in firing, when you see the photos, this is not a chip. The white saucer bottom has early pottery factor soot and imperfections, we feel this adds to the charm. The saucer bottom is white, the cup bottom is "splashed."
The small bottom cup rim, as seen in photos, has rim chips we feel were done in the firing process. See close up photos. You can see the redware clay showing through, which is interesting. A beautiful miniature set found in Totnes, Devon, England. Click images to see condition in close up views. Incredible it stayed together for almost 200 years, and in this condition.
Size: 2.5 inches diameter cup, 4.5 inches diameter saucer
