c. 1900 Masons Mandalay 9178 Pattern Slop or Fruit Bowl, Staffordshire
#AD316 Antique Mason's Slop Bowl:
A beautiful old circa 1820's original waste or slop bowl. It was made by Masons in Staffordshire and is known as the Chinoiserie themed bird pattern: Mandalay 9178.
This is a beautiful and bright early 19th c. piece in vibrant transfer reds with flowers in red, navy blue, pink, green, yellow and brown outline.The center scene is the classic old Chinoiserie style to copy the extremely popular Chinese Export wares of earlier time, classic.
A slop bowl is the 4th component of a traditional tea set. When the unused tea got cold, it was emptied into the slop bowl before again refilling the teapot with hot water. Many beautiful early slop bowls exist, and this is a wonderful original 200 year old piece made in Staffordshire England.
The mark, as seen in photos, is the classic brown Mason's mark, with England underneath, after 1891. It has a blue underglaze letter D and the overglaze painted mark of 9178 B P.
The condition is very good, with bright clean appearance as seen in scan. There are no chips or cracks. It has a clean pedestal base. It was found in Tavistock area area of Devon, England.
